No Really, There’s An APP For That.

I hear there’s an App for just about everything these days.  I hear it everywhere I go, “Oh Hun, there’s as App for that.”

I believe it too.  I have found some pretty wonky apps on days I find myself bored, mind wandering aimlessly.  I pick up my smart phone, hit the Market App thingy ma hoo-ha on the screen and in the search bar type a random word or a subject that I have thought about.  I am instantly  (or not, depending on what apps are running in the back round) transported to a mind-boggling selection some free, some for a fee, some usefu,l many ridiculous Apps to keep your life in order and your mind engaged.

I don’t think my imagination has been compromised but I worry about my kids.  It would seem with the advent of Apps, boredom has become obsolete.

My concern is because when I was a kid, boredom was the mother of invention and usually the predecessor of my imagination running wild.  I have lots of cool stories that started with being bored.  Games invented, trouble I got into, books I read, art created, fun I had.  There was no platform, no parameters, no limitations due to low available memory.  No App. My mind ran free.

My kids get bored and they have an App for that.  A bunch of them.  Where’s the need to be creative?  Scary really.

I do admit that some of them make life more manageable.  Calendars, organizers, pill reminders, shopping and to do lists to name a very few of them.  The Locator App is pretty cool so you don’t lose your kids.  I’m not sure how my mom survived our childhood, without losing her marbles, without it.

And most assuredly if Apps had been around when I was younger my life may have taken some different turns.  The ones that track your cycle and warn you indicate you may be ovulating, might just have been helpful.  I don’t dwell on it much because that would mean one or more of my kids might not be present today.  But every once in a while I find myself to the point of mumbling under my breath after a particularly frustrating interaction, “Why the flippin hell did I not have an App for that?”

Harmless.  Just a what if.

Surely the Apps available are evidence that imagination is alive and well and now if you can think it, you can have an App for it.

I’ve just been thinking since Apps are most likely here to stay I have a few that would make my life better and I hope that someone will be able to create soon.

I would like to have an App to;

  • lock down my phone when I get into power text mode. (put it under psychology, emotional health and /or bipolar.  It would be popular I am sure.)
  • Mend my broken heart
  • Make breakfast for the kids when they get up too early on a Sat.
  • Find the other sock for all those socks
  • Predict rate at which we will run out of TP and then set a reminder 2 days prior that tells me every 10 minutes to buy some. It would have to have an alarm only disarmed  by scanning in a receipt,
  • Last 5 min do-over.  for those times I speak before I think
  • Considering my current single status maybe a personal vibrating massager (for my shoulders you know. I can’t quite hit that spot)

Oh wait. Well I’ll be a monkey’s uncle.  Wow! I am amused  amazed There IS an App for that.

No, really.

  1. I’d like an app that sucks my phone into a black hole for 2 days at a time so it’s nowhere nearby…and an app that gives me back all the time I’ve wasted playing with the apps on my phone.

  2. That reminds me…what I need most is a trap App for my App rat, an App bat for my bat App, and a rapp App for my dance act. I could go on, but right now I’m stuck in traffic and my trip App can’t seem to read my damn App map… Arrrrgggg!

  3. I’d like an app that allows me to sleep in.

Oh and one that tells me where the best parking spot is at…. wait…. thats a good idea. There SHOULD be an app for that!

      1. Lol. It’s the fact it (and 13 like it give or take) exist that started me trippin down the App lane lol. A friend of mine told me ..wel asked me if I knew about it and I was of course curious and more than a little suspicious. This would be a perfect trick to play on gullible ole me. Imagine my amusement. Just had to share.
        Peace:-)

  4. Your posts always get me thinking. It is a little worrisome that kids now days willl never know boredom. I must say since I got my Ipad for Xmas last year there are hardly enough hours in the day! Having instant access to every topic, website, book and movie created so far does tend to keep one busy. But I do wonder how it’s going to affect the kids who will never know a rainy day stuck inside when there is absolutely nothing to do.

I love your list of apps! The other day I asked my 22 year old son in law the time and he said, “oh wait a minute! I have an app for that!” I don’t think he was kidding!

Have a great day! (There might even be an app for that!)

    1. Oh an Ipad…. I would love to have one of those. I have been trying no tv for awhile now and am amazed how taking that out I have so many more hours in the day but also some that I am bored. When I was a kid reading was my #1 got to to engage my mind and escape the duldrums. My mother used to have to tell my brother and I at night, put the book down and go to sleep! If I caught any of my kids up late reading a book, I would let them do it. My 7 yo is the exception. She takes after me in the reading dept, Thank goodness I didnt haul all my childhood books around for nothing, But even since I got my smartphone, my reading has suffered terribly which is how I got to thinking about it. I may be just grumbling becasue I feel like I got jipped, I couldn’t wait until one day my kid says he / she is bored and I could say “Would you like me to find you something to do?” I only fell for that maybe twice because it never ended up being anything pleasant.
      Peace 🙂

      1. There are a few good reading apps. I like Aldiko (or something like it) which is free. They also have a bunch of free public domain books and short stories for download (I have an android).
